Do you find it challenging to make a choice or decision on something? Maybe you defer decision-making to other people because you feel overwhelmed by the options and get stuck in “analysis paralysis”. Or perhaps you default to saying “yes” to things, even things you don’t want, because you don’t want to “rock the boat”. Or maybe you are plagued by self-doubt after you make a decision and then second guess your choice? Trust me, I have been there.
As a recovering people pleaser (with ADHD) decisions have always posed significant challenges for me. I would find myself doing one (or all) of the following:
- Delaying the decision as long as possible, living in limbo, and stressing myself and others out.
- Saying yes to everything and finding myself over-committing and wearing myself out.
- Second guessing my choice, back-pedalling, and exhausting myself with self-doubt.
- Letting other people choose, saying “why don’t you decide” and then going along with what they wanted even if I regretted their choice.
Do any of these sound familiar?
In the past, I would ruminate over my choices endlessly. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Over the course of my own healing journey I have learned some valuable lessons about how to make decisions that are based on my values and in alignment with how I want to feel. This ability to make decisions based on what I want has empowered me to say “yes” to more of the things that light me up, and “no” to the things that drain my time and energy.

Since you are still reading, I’m guessing you may struggle with this too? So let’s get real here. Life is a journey filled with countless choices that shape our experiences in the present and influences our future, and we don’t get a re-do. Therefore, doesn’t it make sense to get in the proverbial “driver’s seat” and make decisions that will improve your health and happiness?
As a life coach, I have guided numerous women on an empowering journey of decision-making mastery. In this article, let’s explore practical strategies and insights to help you make better choices and create a life aligned with your true desires.
- Self-Reflection and Clarity:
Before making any decision, it is crucial to gain clarity about your values, priorities, and aspirations. Take time for self-reflection, exploring what truly matters to you and what you want to achieve in different areas of your life. This introspection will provide a strong foundation for making choices that are in alignment with your authentic self.
- Define Your Goals and Objectives:
Identify the specific goals or outcomes you desire to achieve through your choices. Clearly defining your objectives helps to narrow down your options and focus your decision-making process. It provides a framework against which you can evaluate potential choices and assess their alignment with your desired outcomes.
- Gather Information and Seek Different Perspectives:
Making informed decisions requires gathering relevant information and seeking diverse perspectives. Research, explore, and gather data related to the choices at hand. Consult trusted sources, seek advice from experts, and engage in meaningful conversations with people who have knowledge or experience in the area you are considering. This broadens your understanding and allows you to make more informed choices.
- Weigh Pros and Cons:
Once you have gathered information, it’s essential to evaluate the potential pros and cons of each choice. Create a list or use a decision-making matrix to systematically assess the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Consider short-term and long-term implications, potential risks, and the potential impact on various aspects of your life.
- Trust Your Intuition:
While gathering information and weighing pros and cons are important, don’t underestimate the power of your intuition. Sometimes, our instincts and gut feelings can provide valuable insights and guidance. Learn to listen to your inner voice and trust your intuition. It can help you make choices that resonate with your authentic self.
- Embrace Imperfection and Learn from Mistakes:
Recognize that decision-making is not always black and white. Embrace the fact that mistakes and failures are a natural part of the learning process. Even with the best intentions and thorough analysis, outcomes may not always align with expectations. Use these experiences as opportunities for growth, learn from them, and adjust your approach moving forward.

- Practice Mindfulness and Patience:
In our fast-paced world, impulsive decisions can lead to regrets. Practice mindfulness and cultivate patience in your decision-making process. 000.
